Job Summary-

**The hourly rate for this position is $ 34.79** Plus a 15% 3rd shift differential! 

Sets up and operates multi-axis (9 or more axis) computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine centers. Performs any combination of machining operations such as milling, turning, facing, boring, threading, drilling, reaming, contouring, 3D surfacing and profiling of metal castings, forgings, bar stock, etc.   Requires a complete understanding and analysis of blueprints and process sheets to set up and completely machine a part requiring the use of various types of machine tools.  Follows established company directives, policies, military specifications, quality documents and manufacturing instructions.

Responsibilities-

 

Searches and loads machine program into the CNC computer.   Establishes work shifts, fixture offsets and tool compensations as they relate to the workpiece and program interface.  Make any mathematical calculations necessary to properly locate the various machining areas and hold the machining areas to proper tolerances.

Reviews process sheet specifications to determine sequence of set-up operations and dimensions of finished workpiece. Ensures that all required tooling and precision measuring equipment is available and on-hand. Sets-up lathe and milling heads. Mounts fixtures to machine beds, tables, and/or spindle nose. Positions work-piece in collets, chucks, or fixtures according to set-up instructions and secures workpiece in place.  Assembles cutting tools in tool holders and positions tools in machine spindles according to established procedures

Observes machine operations and verifies accuracy of machined work piece against process sheet specifications using fixed gages, microsite, surface plates, dial gages, micrometers, dial calipers, go and no-go gages, etc.   Must be knowledgeable of keyboard and control panel functions that control the various machining operations.  The employee may be required to perform minor CNC program edits as needed. 

Observes metal-cutting action and monitors cutting tool wear.  Proofs new parts and works with engineering on prototypes pieces. 

Must be able to set up CMM fixtures, call up CMM program, perform CMM probe calibration and interpret CMM data.

Must be adept at troubleshooting issues on the multi-axis machines.  Must be knowledgeable of machinability ratings of materials, workpiece and cutting tool hardness values, cutting tool geometries, material alloys and properties, and cutting tool speeds and feeds calculations Able to convey solutions and best practices to other operators.  Serve as the area’s lead person in the absence of supervision.

Practices safety and good housekeeping policies and procedures.  Perform operator tasks according to the machine’s process maintenance checklist to ensure that the machine is in proper working order, and to record information as instructed.  Perform other tasks or duties as assigned by management.

SKILL

  • Proficient with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, machinability ratings of materials, hardness values, cutting tool alloys, tool geometries, calculations of speeds and feeds, material properties, etc.
  • Adept in the use of indicators, edge finders, and centering probes and other related measuring equipment to establish fixture and tooling offsets.
  • Experiences with keyboard and control panel functions that affect the various machine operations, as well as knowledgeable of Preparatory Functions (G Codes), Miscellaneous Functions (M Codes) and Macro Variables.
  • Knowledgeable in the Machine Coordinate System and how it relates to an operations setup and offsets.
  • Understanding of TMAC software and ability to interpret TMAC data.

Qualifications-

Required: High school diploma and Associate’s Degree in Machine Tool Technology or Precision Machining required. 

 

The physical capacity requirements for this position require the incumbent to be able to lift 35 pounds on a regular basis.  No supervision required as to the mechanics of the job.

A Multi-Axis Specialist must be able to perform all tasks and duties of: NC Lathe #1 and NC Miller #1. 

Must have basic computer skills and may be required to enter and verify information into written forms or database(s) as appropriate.
