Overview

Provides technical expertise in the management of a public and/or private network; tests and analyzes network facilities, including network control software, firewalls, routers, switches, and data communication lines. Installs, supports and/or maintains LANs and/or WANs; evaluates and recommends networking product and software upgrades. Performs technical analyses of software, hardware and transmission facilities using various diagnostic tools in support of efficient network operations. Monitors data traffic and controls network resource performance to ensure high-quality transmission. Identifies, diagnoses and resolves technical problems related to network failure/integrity and usage of PC hardware and software.

Major Position Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the daily administration of a network and server environment.
  • Installs, configures, and maintains system software.
  • Monitors network performance, troubleshoots issues, and deploys solutions.
  • Documents network issues and events using standard formats.
  • Plans and implements upgrades, patches, and new applications and equipment installation.
  • Uses scripting and writes basic programs to automate processes.
  • Maintains and follows disaster recovery, security, backup, and restore plans.
  • May evaluate new tools or equipment and perform analysis/feasibility studies to guide decisions on optimizing network performance.
  • Research technical reference materials for network hardware and software to determine root cause of problems.
  • Interfaces with vendors to ensure appropriate resolution during network outages or periods of reduced performance.
  • Consistent exercise of discretion & judgment.
  • Requires in-depth conceptual and practical knowledge in own job discipline and basic knowledge of related job disciplines.
  • Solves complex problems.
  • Works independently, receives minimal guidance.
  • May lead projects or project steps within a broader project or may have accountability for on-going activities or objectives.
  • Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree
  • Equivalent Combination of Relevent Education &/ or Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Information Systems, Network Administration or related degree
  • 5-7 years experience
  • Proficient with use of Microsoft Office
  • Proven experience with network capacity planning, network security principles, and general network management best practices preferred.
  • Experience with common networking systems, including Cisco routing, switching and VOIP, as well as Palo Alto Firewalls, Riverbed Steelhead, SolarWinds and other network technologies preferred.
  • Working technical knowledge of current network protocols and standards, including TCP/IP, Routing protocols, DNS, NTP, etc.
