Sr. Forge Engineer develops and designs a variety of tools, machinery and equipment, such as shaping and cutting tools, dies, gauges and fixtures, for manufacturing and experimental purposes. Consults with plant and manufacturing personnel to determine tool specifications and requirements. Evaluates tools and machinery to improve quality and performance.

 

Major Position Responsibilities

Must have recent experience in the following: 

  • Designs and develops tools and machinery used to facilitate and optimize manufacturing processes.
  • Reviews product design and build requirements to determine tooling concepts, design options, testing plans, and specifications.
  • Develops designs for fixtures, jigs, gauges, cutting and forming tools, carts, racks, and other items to support production.
  • Utilizes Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to create accurate, complete, and concise design models and documentation to fabricate tools.
  • Estimates costs, resource requirements, and materials required for tools. May manage the sourcing, quoting, or procurement of purchased tools
  • Consistent exercise of discretion & judgment
  • Requires in-depth conceptual and practical knowledge in own job discipline and basic knowledge of related job disciplines
  • Solves complex problems
  • Works independently, receives minimal guidance
  • May lead projects or project steps within a broader project or may have accountability for on-going activities or objectives
  • Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience

 

Basic Qualifications

Education and/or Experience: 

  • Associates Degree, Bachelor's degree preferred in General Engineering or specialized Engineering degree required
  • 5-7 years’ experience designing tooling and processes for the manufacture of aluminum and magnesium forgings for the aerospace and/or munitions industry.
  • 5 plus years of die design preferred.
  • Experience with ACAD, Solidworks, and CATIA and/or other 3D modeling experience preferred

Major Competencies/Skills:

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Experience withSteel, Hydraulic Forging Press Aluminum Die Design (Preform, Blocker, Finisher) Design
  • Closed Die (Precision & Conventional) Tooling experience
  • Open Die Tooling experience
  • Ability to manage Floor Tryout / 1st Article Oversite of Design Through To Production Release

Physical Demands:   

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position at a desk and/or computer for extended periods of time.
  • Requires regular movement throughout GD-OTS facilities.
  • Work primarily in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential.
  • Work may require employee to work inside and outside with exposure to changing climate and/or operate machinery.
