GD Motion Control, a Division of General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, develops and manufactures a broad range of high performance electro-mechanical components, sub-assemblies and systems to the aerospace, defense and security markets.

Major Position Responsibilities

  • Function as Senior Control Systems Engineer in all phases of new product design and development. Direct activities will include system block diagram development, system architecture and algorithm design, detailed analysis and regression testing, Test Plan/Procedure development, and any necessary debug support of product.
  • Identify and evaluate new technologies, and accurately assess how they can be implemented into the overall motion control system.
  • Function as key review team member reviewing advanced technologies and sensors being considered as part of new product development activities. Critical assessment of offering strengths, weaknesses, and creation of budgetary estimates required.
  • Interface with multiple disciplines such as program management, electrical and mechanical engineering, procurement, customer service, manufacturing personnel and subcontractors.
  • Customer interface for requirements development, trade study, packaging discussions, design review activities, etc.
  • Ability to lead system and subsystem specification developments required. Includes establishing error budgets, system trades and requirements flow down.
  • Has extensive experience developing complex control systems, and appreciates the interactions of the system as a whole, rather than just at the subsystem level.

Basic Qualifications

  • A complete understanding of motion control systems.
  • Thorough understanding of robust engineering development processes, from top level system architecture development, into planning, development, verification and qualification phases.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote teamwork and cooperative efforts working with the program team as well as other engineering management and staff.
  • A good team player with strong analytical and problem solving abilities.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.  Ability to communicate with customers from an appropriate technology perspective.  Able to provide strong contributions to technical proposal efforts, by generating written technical descriptions.
  • Knowledge and Technical Skills: Technical or industry specific job knowledge. Proficient computer skills required, including Excel, Word and Power Point.  
  • Decision-Making: Judgment and analytical conceptualization abilities. Ability to make high-level decisions, conferring with Engineering Manager. Own judgment required.
  • Initiative: Ability to proactively develop new ideas/methodologies. Ability to express ideas clearly in both written and oral communications. Problems are varied in nature, must be capable of adjusting.
  • Planning/Organizing: Project Management capability. Ability to plan, organize, own work and develop plan for department. Capable of managing and prioritizing multiple projects, tasks.
  • Communication: Verbal/Written, negotiation skills, presentation skills, etc. Excellent verbal and written skills needed. 
  • Leadership: Coaching, Mentoring, performance management responsibilities. Immediate attention may be required on certain issues to avoid escalation of problems in support of assigned projects. Ability to lead, and/or influence individuals or groups.
  • Other Job Requirements: Travel, foreign language, etc. Must be willing to travel as needed to customer sites, trade shows, training, etc. Occasionally other duties may be required to help meet the goals of the department/facility.

Education: BS Degree (MS Degree preferred)


Experience: 10-15 years in relevant product design.
